Keyword Research Is Easier Than Poker

Because you are able to peek at the cards to see what your competition is focusing on while building your organic search strategy.

You know what keywords that you are targeting so do a search and check out the top spots on Google to see where you rank. If you are not in the top five, let’s check out what the other players are doing. For this example, we will do a Google Search for “beer” and let’s breakdown page one.

  1. Beer – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  2. Realbeer.com – What Part of Beer Don’t You Understand?
  3. BeerAdvocate – Respect Beer
  4. Samuel Adams – America’s World Class Beer
  5. Official Yuengling Web Site: America’s Oldest Brewery
  6. RateBeer: The Ultimate Source For All Things Beer
  7. Beer Info – Brews news Service and Beer Library
  8. About Beer
  9. Budweiser Beer from Anheuser-Busch: the Great American Lager
  10. Coors Light

Throw in the local business results for beer and you have the first page search.

The first result cannot be topped; Google loves Wikipedia and its content so that is how it goes so we will focus on two through six for this assignment.

  1. Go to Realbeer.com result and right-click to open in a new tab.
  2. Click on the Realbeer.com tab to make it active.
  3. Hit Ctrl+U on your keyboard to bring up the Page source.
  4. Hit Ctrl+F and type in “Keywords” to highlight keywords in the code.
  5. Open Excel and build a chart of the top five sites and do a comparison of words.
  6. Repeat for the other four sites to build your information.
  7. Key factor is to keep the words in order they are listed in from left to right as you build the list.

Since I like Fat Tire and it’s not on the first page, I will use New Belgium as my business.

Looking at my spreadsheet you can see that I am focusing on the top seven words. Naturally “beer” is listed but let’s break down the order of the other keywords to build our hand (words) and what order that you should be using. The top two after Wikipedia is Realbeer.com and BearAdvocate which both list “beer” as their first keyword.

Samuel Adams is a strong brand but uses its trademark signatures for their first three spots in keyword placement. I suspect that if they listed “beer” as the first keyword, they would jump to the number two spot.

Yeungling uses Meta “Content-type” for its keywords as does my company, New Belgium. What this means is that these two are using the content from their web pages to generate keywords. Some businesses feel this covers everything possible but we are not a fan of this technique. There is such a thing called stop words in search and Google takes this into account for search and it can reduce your sites value.

At the sixth spot, RateBeer provides some great insight into keyword management. By comparing RateBeer to RealBeer.com, I can tell that brew, brewpub and brew pubs does not get searched as frequently as microbrew or craft beer.

So my business, New Belgium should use the keywords in this order:

  1. Beer
  2. Microbrew
  3. Craft Beer
  4. Brew Pub
  5. Brewing

For the average consumer there are just two kinds of beers, beer and microbrew, which is a niche flavored beer. If a person is looking for a specific brand, they will use the brand name and you cannot compete with that search.

So you now have your poker hand with your first five cards giving you a solid chance to win with organic search. This is just a small part of SEO but it is a great way to start playing.
